Back to Yucca Mtn.

News this week on Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Site, the largest potential storage facility in the world has been given another bump backwards by Energy Secretary Steven Chu who has stated that “The Yucca Mountain Project is no longer considered an option for radioactive waste storage.”

Clark County officials are not waiting for Washington to go sideways on this promise and have initiated a $200k study to evaluate the dangers involved with the transporting of high level toxic waste travelling through Las Vegas. The study is for the railways and trucking routes that will transport the bubbly stuff.

Hopefully this study will provide enough solid data to prevent the Nuclear Regulatory Commission from allowing the application to move forward towards the opening of the 77,000 ton storage site. The study is expected to be completed with the aid of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas by the end of this year.
